Be sure to set up a Social Security profile!
Even if you’re not ready to start Social Security benefits, you’ll still need a Social Security account to enroll in Medicare. It’s a good idea to create your profile at least 3 months before turning 65. Then you can:
Creating your Social Security profile is free and only takes a few minutes. If you’re already receiving Social Security, you’ll be automatically enrolled in Medicare. Otherwise, you can sign up separately.
It’s Time to Start Medicare
(Unless You’re Getting Employer Coverage)
If you’re turning 65, it’s time to enroll in Medicare—unless you’re planning to keep working and have coverage through your employer. Here’s your 7-month window for Medicare Part A and Part B:
Enrolling early (in the 3 months before) helps ensure your coverage starts as soon as you turn 65. If you miss this Enrollment Period, you may face delays or late penalties.
If you’re turning 65 but still working:
1. Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
Fall (October 15 – December 7)
2. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment
Spring- (April 1 - June 30)
1. Medicare Advantage (Part C)
2. Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
